Art + Identity looks at the myriad of cultural identities that are reflected in Canadian contemporary art today. It is a piece that celebrates the work of a select group of young contemporary artists from contemporary dance, visual arts, new media and theatre from major Canadian cities.
Art + Identity is a photographic series and soundscape installation that delves into the personal artistic expression of the individual and reflects the unique identities that have grown out of our Canadian landscapes.
As a young woman blessed with a diverse and electic upbringing, I have always been intrigued by what it means to ‘be’ Canadian. I am interested in exploring how the newer generations of our population (myself included) incorporate and express a multitude of cultures and influences that create a new distinction of who we are as individuals and how this is connected to what it means to be Canadian.
As a photographer my work centers around capturing local artists set against unique exterior environments and urban landscapes. In addition as the Founder of the Emerging Arts Professional Network I have been focused on promoting the voice of Canada’s arts community and have conducted recorded interviews with arts professionals across the country. I am fascinated with the stories of how people come to create the work they do, their career/life paths and how closely arts and identity are linked.
Art + Identity has been both an outlet for personal exploration and a dynamic collaboration with eight different artists including composer Edgardo Moreno and sound advisor Arianne Robinson. This work is a celebration of our collective diversity reflected in contemporary arts today.
